In the early 1820s, Rugendas left for Brazil, soon to be hired by Baron von Langsdorff as illustrator for the scientific expedition to Minas Gerais & Sao Paulo. When he was replaced by Adrien Taunay, he remained alone in the country until 1825, travelling through Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco, Mato Grosso and other regions, recording his impressions mainly in drawings and watercolours
